Gijón 7/9-7/11

Updated: Apr 29, 2024

We went to Gijón on Tuesday with the program. It was my first time going there! It's the closest beach town from Oviedo, being 30 minutes away. We were split up into two groups based on our Spanish level and taken to the ethnographic museum where we got to see how Asturian people lived, how traditional cider was made, etc. It was really interesting to see and imagine living like people once did. The exhibits were outside which I thought was interesting because I couldn't imagine having an outdoor exhibit back home without there being a huge fence around the entire area because people would definitely just vandalize it or steal. After the museum, we got dropped off in the city to explore for about an hour by ourselves. It was nice to be near the beach and in a beach town again, especially in Spain :) The actual beach itself was so crowded with people it was insane, but nonetheless my friends and I decided we were gonna come back the next day.

Wednesday came, and because we decided to go to Gijón right after school, we had to bring everything with us to class. I booked the bus tickets for all of us the night before, but was too tired go pack my things until the morning. It backfired in the morning because I hadn't realized there was pudding that exploded in my backpack...yes I said pudding. All of the pudding was pooled in the bottom of my backpack and covering everything that was in my backpack which was super great. So we were almost late to school because of that, oops.

When we finally got to Gijón and found a place on the beach, I thought it was time to finally relax, but God was like "ha you thought". The towel I had packed that morning turned out to be the smallest bath towel I had ever seen, so like BIG L's. I had to go buy one at the closest home store I could find, which happened to be Zara Home. It was unnecessarily expensive but I had no other option really. It took us about an hour because we tried going to other places we thought might have towels, but apparently no one sold any, imagine that! But anyways, finally I could relax on the beach before heading home around 8pm. This day just explained my funny bad luck with certain dumb things I seem to have.

Today, I was extremely tired again, per usual, we all were. The 25 minute walk home seemed like it would never end. I wanted to sleep when I got home so bad, but we have lunch right when we get home at the house, and I knew I had a lot of work to do. After relaxing for a couple of hours, Carly and I decided to go to Starbucks and study, before going to check out the University gym. The gym was the biggest disappointment, and closed at 8pm; we got there at 7:30pm. The guy also assumed we were there for the sauna only, and didn't even mention any actual exercise machines, so we said fuck it and worked out on the track that was across the street.

Something I would like to address is the food here. It's full of carbs I swear. They have potatoes, bread and eggs with every meal, oh and ham/pork and cheese,. There is not a lot of much else really. I've also noticed that they don't really use much sauce, a lot of dishes are super dry, like the potato tostada. It is literally just potato and egg. I have barely eaten any meat here other than pork because they just love their pork, which is great for them! I am personally not the biggest fan. My favorite dish I've eaten here is the tomato salad, which is basically just tomatoes and olive oil if that tells you anything, but I am still open to try new things lol.

I am going to San Sebastian this weekend with some friends, which is my host mom's favorite city in all of Spain so I am really excited! Stay tuned!

Picture Details!

*Just wanna quickly apologize for the shitty quality pictures in this post. Gijón was just really not as pretty as I wanted it to be lmao, so I didn't take many pictures

1. Gijón; another random building I thought looked really pretty...

2. This was taken by my friend, but it perfectly represents my necessities of the trip so far

3. Taken in Oviedo, on our walk home from the bus station, couldn't tell ya what it is...
